Carl Gould is a business growth expert, author and serial entrepreneur. His career started by accident when he broke his leg and dropped out of his undergraduate accounting and finance program. At eighteen, he turned to what he knew best- landscaping- and his business growth endeavors began as he doubled his business each year for the next five years until it sold. Since then Carl has built three multi-million dollar businesses before age 40, mentored the launch of over 5,000 businesses, and has trained and certified over 7,000 business coaches in 35 countries.
Carl has written 3 best-selling books on business strategy and growth (Blueprint for Success, The 7 Stages of Small Business Success, and most recently Biz Dev Done Right). His clients range from Fortune 500 Companies to Small-to-Mid Market Businesses. Gould regularly appeared on the home improvement reality TV show “ThisHouse- Too”, and each week he co-hosts “Quit and Get Rich” on iHeart® radio. Carl is married with three children and lives in New Jersey.
[8:09]: The owner says to me, “So how’d it go?” I’m like, “Well, I think pretty good.” And he said, “Well, why do you think pretty good?” I said, “Well, they signed the proposal, and they gave me a 50% deposit.”
[17:17]: But here’s the reality: in the beginning, the coaching world was just coaches, coaching other coaches. It was very little of the outside world engaging a coach. And I’ve since trained over 7000 coaches in 35 countries, and I could tell you that somebody goes into coaching in the beginning almost always to heal thyself than to heal others
[28:04]: I was younger in age than almost everyone I was working with, but I had equal experience. At first, I was really nervous. I went to this training class, I read every inch of the manual, because I’m like, I can’t do this. You know, I’m a young guy. Most of the consultants were 50- ish, that was the average age. I’m 34 at this class.
[36:59]: I say: “Jack of all trades, master of some”…. I think that really is the best way to be a generalist. You don’t have to be a master of all right, but being a master of some and having that breadth that you bring to the table.
[42:02]: A lot of small business try to build off the corporate model. Either they came from there, or they made the gross mistake, in my opinion, of hiring a corporate level advisor for a tiny business. And they silo things- the only way you can do something at a really grand scale. And it’s the worst thing you could do in a tiny business.
[43:31]: Can you share with us a current struggle in the business? … Our business is growing, it’s doing very nicely. But I think that it’s getting limiting because I can only do so many personal appearances. I can scale it in front of a certain amount of audiences and all that, but there is a limit to it. Now I’m starting to think as much about legacy as I’m thinking currency.
