My Guest: Meg Clarke

Meg Clarke, mom to 3 boys, 1 golden doodle and wife to Mike, is passionate about helping women business owners make a bigger impact in their world by getting found by Google. She is an expert at connecting the dots of data to get your business found.

Designer at heart, Meg discovered a massive issue when she tried to enter the web design space…her clients had gorgeous websites but they weren’t getting found. What’s the point of a beautiful site if no one can find it?

Meg traveled the (digital) world and learned everything she could about how it works. She then founded Clapping Dog Media, an SEO company dedicated to giving small businesses as much Google-juice as possible.

Episode Highlights:

[06:32] I’m literally wearing a tiara … I was sitting with my copywriting team and we were discussing something and I don’t remember exactly how it came up, but basically there was a problem and I just snap solved it. And I’m like, “I’m a queen, why don’t I have a crown? I should have a crown.” … And so my copywriters surprise ordered me a tiara and it got delivered to my office yesterday.

[08:09] But then I stopped that when my husband and I adopted two children from Uganda. We had to go to Uganda for a long time and then when we came back, I just stopped working.

[13:40] With adoption, with these kids building up their identity and who they are and where they come from, it’s not so conscious when they’re a biological kid, but you’re like constantly saying, “Hey, you’re a Clarke. This is your family. You’re a Clarke forever and this is what this means.”

[16:48] So many women go through this transition. Very often it’s that exact journey, right? They go from employed, to “mom-ployed” if that’s a term-I just made it up, to “Oh my God, my life is broken now.”

[29:10] I have someone who’s a blogger, and she’s actually very successful and she gets cold traffic. And I was like, “That’s so cool. She’s getting all this free stuff.” She’s like, “Estie, I just want you to know that most of the time all I get is like $5 or a free hand cream.”

[31:00] When Google comes to your site, the first thing they do is they read the title of your page or the title of your website. Nine times out of 10, if you are a personal brand, or if you’re like me where my name is Meg Clark, but my business is Clapping Dog Media, nine times out of ten, both of those are not in the page title. And I want to be found for both.

[39:27] If you can figure out who you are, and how you want to be found, and make that evident in your site, you’re going to find that you’re going to connect with the people who need you.

[57:23] My biggest struggle in my business is demystifying this myth of “Oh, if I hire you, my business is going to be- I’m going to be Oprah.” And really getting over to people that SEO is a layer of your marketing. It does not break you or make you, but it’s a very foundational part of your business.
